What Would You Do If Fear Wasn't Making the Decisions?

August 11, 20262 min read

Eventually, with almost every client, I land on some version of the same question: what would you do differently if fear wasn't a factor?

Most people don't think of themselves as afraid. They think of themselves as responsible. Strategic. Prepared. They've got the plan, the next five moves, the contingency for the contingency. But underneath a lot of that planning is something quieter — a belief that if they just strategize hard enough, they'll never have to feel the fear of getting it wrong.

I know this pattern because I lived it. I told myself I needed more "real world experience" before I could call myself a coach. I was too young. Too inexperienced. I didn't know enough yet. So I stayed, and I climbed the ladder instead: division to department to municipal government leadership. Even when I wondered if I on a Friday I could do another week.

I built my next chapter the way most of us are taught to. Figure out the plan first, then force yourself into it. Strategy first, self second. It works, for a while. Right up until it doesn't.

What I've learned since, and what I now coach and teach, is something the research backs up too: you can't strategize your way into authenticity. You can only build it. Strategy is a tool, a good one, but it was never meant to be the starting point. The starting point is you. What's true for you. What you actually want. What your body already knows before your brain finishes building its case against it.

That's the work now. Not abandoning structure, but breaking the habit of reaching for it before you've checked in with yourself. Breaking the autopilot. Leading from alignment instead of from the fear of being wrong.

What is it costing you to keep strategizing your way around yourself?

Journal Questions

  • Where in your life right now are you leading with strategy before you've checked in with yourself?

  • What would you do differently this week if fear wasn't the one making the decision?

  • What does your body already know that your brain is still building a case against?

  • If you stopped strategizing your way around the fear and just felt it instead, what might you actually want?
